Can't you at least explain what this is all about?
Alcydia prepares to get to work in the torture dungeon.
Prudi: Wait! Mercy! Can't you at least explain what this is all about?
Alcydia: We-ell, I guess we're at the point in time where I will reveal my devilish scheme while laughing maniacally.
Wolfman 1: It's a tradition!
Wolfman 2: Those tiny details are so important!
Alcydia: Dearest Prudence, the cause of recent events is simply that... I WANT TO BE WITCH QUEEN INSTEAD OF THE WITCH QUEEN! Ever since I was a little witch, I've felt called upon to rule. My powers grew, I made plans, forged alliances, prepared a coup d'état. My plan was perfect, but at a critical moment, one of my accomplices became loose-lipped, with disastrous consequences. The Queen was warned. All exits from the Undercity were magically sealed against us. The plotters were made to disappear and executed in deepest secrecy! But fate favored me! My agents discovered that I had a double! I had you abducted and made you assume my identity. Only the decisive move remained: the fake Alcydia, meaning you, had to die before the secret police were ready to move! With Alcydia presumed dead, I would be able to escape disguised as Prudence the lowly maid. A brilliant plan, save that the ungrateful girl had the audacity to survive all my murder attempts! Aargh! It's not fair! Which brings us to-
Prudi: Wait! Isn't there more? Mommy!

Alcydia's Confession, a song from the musical The Double, based on this scene. Vocals by Danielle Westerhof (Alcydia) and Kim Middel (Prudi). Daniel took the English dialog and turned it almost directly into a song lyric, with hardly any changes.

And that is, indeed, the reference. It's amazing how many people neither get the reference nor understand the phrase at all.

Perhaps some readers got but said nothing.

Also, it's an European comic, even though it's available in English, it may not be so well-known outside of Europe.
